Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions at the Cost of War

Wars and geopolitical crises are typically recognized for their humanitarian, economic, and social consequences. However, their impacts can extend beyond these areas, affecting the environment and trends in greenhouse gas emissions as well.

This report examines the impact of the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran on global greenhouse gas emissions. Based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and an analysis by The Washington Post, the conflict has been accompanied by a significant reduction in projected global greenhouse gas emissions. This reduction is an unintended consequence of the crisis and does not result from climate policy. At the same time, U.S. federal regulations aimed at curbing carbon emissions are being rolled back.
