Encouragement of Walking

Walking is one of the most effective and sustainable modes of transportation on university campuses. In addition to reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, it promotes physical and mental well-being, encourages social interaction, and enhances the quality of public spaces. Fostering a culture of walking is therefore an essential component of creating a healthy, people-centered, and environmentally sustainable campus.

Alongside the development of pedestrian infrastructure, the University of Zanjan actively promotes active mobility through cultural and recreational initiatives. Campus walking events are organized to encourage students, faculty members, and staff to adopt healthier and more sustainable travel habits while increasing awareness of the environmental and health benefits of walking. To further motivate participation, prizes such as bicycles and gift cards are awarded through prize draws during selected events.

By encouraging walking and other forms of active transportation, the University seeks to reduce dependence on private vehicles, lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and create a more vibrant, accessible, and livable campus environment. These initiatives support the University's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), while also contributing to the sustainable mobility indicators of international campus sustainability rankings such as UI GreenMetric.
